Vitamins
& minerals - Wellness Ingredients Guide
Vitamins
and minerals are essential for metabolic and physiological functions.
They play roles in nutrient absorption, energy production and
cell replication. Consumers are well aware of the importance of
the more publicized vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C and
calcium. However, others play essential roles in disease prevention
as well.
Chromium
may have the potential to overcome insulin resistance and, as
a result, elevated blood pressure. Chromium deficiency results
in diabetic symptoms including high blood glucose, decreased insulin
binding and increased total cholesterol.
Selenium
is receiving attention for its role in reducing the risk of cancer.
Researchers believe that selenium may destroy early cancer growths
by inducing cancerous cells to die. Selenium also prevents the
oxidation of LDL cholesterol. When LDL oxidizes, it may combine
with calcium to form plaque on arterial walls.
Vitamin
A aids in the maintenance and growth of tissue, teeth and bones
and is vital for vision. It is also a possible cancer preventative
and may lower the risk of heart disease.
Folie
acid protects against neural tube birth defects and possibly against
heart disease. Research also points to its potential role in protection
against colon cancer.
Vitamin
E, in the form of alpha-tocopherol and tocotrienols, is a potent
antioxidant. Evidence points to tocotrienols' ability to lower
cholesterol, reverse and stabilize stroke, reduce clot and platelet
aggregation. They may hold promise in breast cancer treatment
as well.
Natural
and synthetic vitamin E have the same molecular formula, but they
differ in three-dimensional structure. Recent published work has
shown that the bioavailability of synthetic alpha tocopherol is
roughly half that of natural.
